The average monthly temperatures in Bulgaria in October are expected to be around the seasonal norm. They will range from 11 to 15C in the lowlands, from 10 to 13C in the higher plains, and from 0 to 7C in the mountain areas. Overall temperatures will range from minus 5 to 27C, meteorologist Dr Krasimir Stoev of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology told BTA on Monday.
The monthly precipitation totals are expected to be around or above average. The normal precipitation level is between 40 and 70 litres per square metre across most of the country and between 50 and 100 litres per square metre in the southeastern regions.
Temperatures to be mostly below average during the first 10 days
In the first 10 days of October, air masses moving over the country will come from the northeast. Temperatures will be below the average, although they are expected to rise in the middle of the period. During the first days of the month and from October 6 to 8, cloudy weather will prevail, with rain in many parts of the country. The likelihood of significant rainfall totals will be high. Following the passage of a Mediterranean cyclone in the final days of the period, temperatures will drop significantly. In many parts of the country, clear skies and light winds will create conditions for frost.
Temperatures to rise during the second 10-day period, with rain also possible
At the beginning of the second 10-day period of October, temperatures are expected to rise. Cloud cover will increase, and the likelihood of rainfall will rise again by the middle of the period. During the final days of the period, an area of high pressure will dominate, bringing dry weather and, in some places, significant breaks in the cloud cover. Fog or low stratus cloud will form in many parts of the lowland areas. Cold air will enter from the northeast on the periphery of the high-pressure system, leading to a more pronounced drop in temperatures.
Rain and falling temperatures expected during the third 10-day period
At the beginning and end of the final 10-day period, atmospheric disturbances are likely to bring rainfall, followed by a relative drop in temperatures. The middle of the period is expected to bring calmer weather, with fog in the lowlands and predominantly sunny conditions in the mountain areas.
