The Government should submit to Parliament a joint report by the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW), and the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) on rising road traffic deaths and injuries, along with urgent measures, responsible officials, and deadlines, Vazrazhdane MP Petar Petrov said in a parliamentary declaration.
The party also called for a public list of urgent safety measures on dangerous national roads ahead of winter, an account of delayed repairs, contract price adjustments and penalties, and regular public reporting on results.
According to Interior Ministry data cited by Petrov, 394 people have died and 6,811 have been injured in traffic accidents since the beginning of the year through October 15. This is 57 more deaths and 109 more injuries than during the same period in 2025. Petrov said Bulgaria had the EU’s highest road fatality rate last year, at 71 deaths per million people, 65% above the EU average.
Petrov criticized the Government for announcing initiatives without demonstrating results. He said the higher fines and average-speed checks introduced last year had not delivered sufficient improvement. According to figures cited in the party’s declaration, revenue from traffic fines had fallen by EUR 11 million, or 20%, while 875,000 fines for traffic violations remained undelivered. Of 78,000 average-speed violations recorded over a year, 34,000 had not resulted in traffic fines, the declaration said.
Petrov also accused the MRDPW and RIA of failing to provide visible results on road safety, including road markings, pavement conditions, drainage, signs and safety barriers. He said the Regional Development Minister missed the deadline to submit a report on activities of the state-owned Avtomagistrali EAD company.
Vazrazhdane also criticized the Government for prioritizing increases in construction contract prices and raising vignette fees by 30% without providing a convincing public account of road safety improvements and project deadlines.
