Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev said Thursday that an audit of Bulgarian Posts had identified numerous management weaknesses. These included a lack of genuine activity beyond spending the state subsidy, reliance on external services, consultancy contracts with unclear purposes, and payments for services that should be provided by the postal service itself, including legal services and advice on public procurement.
He said the company’s new management had already reviewed more than 200 contracts and terminated those it deemed unjustified. The key issue now is the report to the European Commission on the restructuring plan, Peev said, adding that all the necessary documents had been prepared and that the future level of the state subsidy would depend on the report.
Asked about road safety reform, the minister reiterated that no new mega-structure would be created, but that a major reform centred on digitalization would be carried out. He recalled that road traffic control is expected to be transferred to the Interior Ministry and added that no employees of the Automobile Administration Executive Agency would be made redundant. The draft 2027 budget also provides for an increase in the sector’s low basic salaries, the minister said.
Asked about Kazichene Railway Station, also known as the Royal Station, the minister said he would look into its legal status and whether it could be included in the renovation works under the current Sofia–Elin Pelin railway project or addressed through a separate project. He said the management of the National Railway Infrastructure Company had been instructed to conduct a comprehensive review of historically and architecturally significant railway stations across the country and draw up a dedicated restoration programme.
Regarding the return of Tsar Samuel’s remains to Bulgaria and their placement in a sarcophagus at St Sophia Church, the minister said free train travel had been arranged on the main railway routes on Saturday, allowing as many people as possible from across the country to attend the historic event.
