Blagoevgrad is a city of young people that connects the past with the present and future, President Iliana Iotova said at a historical re-enactment on Saturday.
She spoke at the official opening of Gorna Dzhumaya Street: People, Houses and Pageantry, part of commemorations marking the 114th anniversary of the liberation of Gorna Dzhumaya, now Blagoevgrad.
In her address, Iotova recalled how the Treaty of Berlin had divided the Bulgarian lands after the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation, leaving Gorna Dzhumaya within the Ottoman Empire. Its people had continued their struggle for freedom for nearly three decades, she said. She recalled the rebellions and uprisings, and the activities of members of the Macedonian-Adrianople revolutionary movement. Its activists had walked the streets of the old Varosha borough, including Peyo Yavorov, one of the movement’s ideologues. She also recalled his ties to Pirin and the struggle to liberate Bulgarians in Macedonia.
Iotova described Blagoevgrad as an important centre in southwestern Bulgaria and a city of young people. She noted the importance of its two universities and said the city drew young people who wanted to settle there, raise families, pursue careers and build their futures. Blagoevgrad was becoming a desirable place to study, fulfil professional ambitions and build a future, she said.
Iotova said the anniversary was an occasion to honour the memory of those who had left their homes and families in the cause of freedom and their homeland. She described it as both a day of tribute and prayer and a call for “a dignified, holy, free and prosperous Bulgaria”.
Blagoevgrad Mayor Metodi Baykushev also greeted the residents and visitors gathered for the event. He recalled the struggle that had won Gorna Dzhumaya’s freedom and stressed the importance of citizens taking responsibility for their own country.
The opening was also attended by Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova-Blagova, Blagoevgrad Regional Governor Vasil Trendafilov, Blagoevgrad Municipal Council Chair Antoaneta Bogdanova and Neofit Rilski South-West University Rector Nikolay Marin.
Earlier on Saturday, Iotova joined a March of Remembrance, part of the programme marking the city’s holiday on October 5. This year’s celebrations have the theme Blagoevgrad Celebrates Freedom.
