Botev Plovdiv football club President and co-owner of the largest transport and logistics company in Bulgaria PIMK, Ilian Filipov, died from a gunshot wound, with authorities investigating the case as premeditated murder, the Plovdiv Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry and Plovdiv District Prosecutor’s Office said on Wednesday.
A report of a man who had been shot in a Plovdiv borough was received at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday. Later, the management of Botev Plovdiv announced that club President Filipov had died.
Plovdiv District Prosecutor Vanya Hristeva told a briefing that the Plovdiv District Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing pre-trial proceedings into Filipov’s murder. She said investigative actions began in the early hours of Wednesday, immediately after a report was made to the 112 emergency number.
Plovdiv’s police chief, Senior Commissioner Vasil Kostadinov, said the murder took place at around 1 a.m. at a property owned by the businessman. There was no information that he had previously reported receiving threats.
Kostadinov said cordon and security measures were introduced immediately after the report of the murder in an effort to minimize the possibility of a specific person leaving the city. He said investigators were pursuing a specific line of inquiry based on concrete information and that checkpoints in the city would remain in place for as long as necessary. He declined to disclose further details of the investigation.
National Police General Directorate Director, Chief Commissioner Emil Parmakov, said that a task force was set up on the orders of the Interior Minister. Security and control measures have been introduced in Plovdiv and neighbouring regions, while border controls have also been tightened, he added.
Teams of investigating police officers are carrying out procedural and investigative actions at the scene, while witnesses are being identified and summoned, Parmakov said.
The Bulgarian Football Union expressed its deepest condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased, as well as to everyone at PFC Botev Plovdiv, following the tragic death of the club President. Bulgarian top-flight football clubs also offered their condolences on social media.
