The historic building of the National Assembly, the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, and the Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo (North Central Bulgaria) on Monday were illuminated in pink, the symbol of the fight against breast cancer. The initiative was proposed by Health Committee Chair Kostadin Angelov and is being carried out with the support and personal involvement of National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
A pink ribbon, the symbol of breast cancer awareness, and the message “United in the Fight against Breast Cancer” were projected onto the National Assembly building from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday.
By joining the awareness campaign, the National Assembly is voicing its solidarity and commitment to the health of every Bulgarian woman, Dotsova said, as quoted by Parliament’s press service.
According to an analysis cited in Bulgaria’s National Cancer Control Plan, the incidence of newly diagnosed malignant cancers stood at 399.3 per 100,000 people in 2020. Breast cancer in women is among the cancers with a high incidence, alongside cancers of the prostate, skin, trachea, bronchi and lungs, colon, uterus, cervix and bladder.
Common risk factors include advancing age, a previous breast cancer diagnosis, family history and genetic predisposition. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through moderate physical activity, healthy body weight and limiting smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can reduce the risk, the Ministry said, stressing that early diagnosis is key to successful treatment.
In February, the European Commission published its latest country cancer profiles. Bulgaria and Cyprus are the only two EU countries where cancer mortality has increased over the past decade.
October has been observed worldwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month since 1985. Events are held each year to raise awareness of the disease, its risk factors and the importance of prevention and early detection, the Health Ministry said on its website.
