Amid growing strategic confrontation on a global scale, we must maintain a high level of readiness to ensure the effective implementation of the Alliance’s defence plans, Bulgaria’s Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, said during his participation in the annual conference of the NATO Military Committee in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry press service announced on Saturday.
He noted that greater commitments by European allies and Canada to the defence of the Euro-Atlantic area do not simply mean maintaining a military presence. They require the deployment of the right forces in the right place, at the necessary level of readiness, and with the ability to sustain them for as long as the operational situation requires.
“This requires preparing our forces, taking measures, including legislative measures, to provide the necessary authorities for their employment when required, meeting our agreed Capability Targets, adapting the defence industry, and finding an approach to the adoption of new technologies that is both rapid and carefully considered. Only by striking a balance between the rapid integration of innovation and the preservation of interoperability will we be able to meet the challenges of today’s security environment,” Eftimov said, according to the statement.
During the conference, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) presented his strategic considerations on the feasibility of the Alliance’s defence plans and the status of NATO’s missions, operations and activities. The Chiefs of Defence discussed approaches to achieving the level of readiness required to implement the Alliance’s defence plans in the context of the Concept for the Deterrence and Defence of the Euro-Atlantic Area, as well as the implementation of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence Policy, the statement said.
Particular attention was devoted to the processes of transformation and capability development. The new requirements arising from the changing character of warfare call for increased capacity in the defence industry and an accelerated rollout of innovative capabilities, the Defence Ministry said.
As part of the forum, Eftimov held a bilateral meeting with France’s Chief of Defence, General Fabien Mandon, during which the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest.
The NATO Military Committee Conference, the Alliance’s highest military authority, is being held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 18-19. The forum brings together the Chiefs of Defence of all 32 NATO member states. The conference will conclude with the election of the next Chair of the Alliance’s highest military body.
