Bulgaria is a hub for polar research in the region and will host the first Balkan scientific conference on polar studies in November, Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition head Prof. Christo Pimpirev said on Tuesday. He spoke after President Iliana Iotova presented the national flag to the 35th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition at a ceremony in the Coat of Arms Hall at the President’s Administration.
“This year, during the upcoming 35th expedition, we have 18 scientific projects to carry out. Scientists from many countries around the world are working alongside our researchers, including from the United States (US), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and almost all Balkan countries, because Bulgaria has become a hub, a centre for polar research for the entire region. It is no coincidence that in November we will hold the first Balkan scientific conference here in Bulgaria,” Pimpirev said.
The expedition will carry out 18 main projects and six projects in international cooperation with Brazil, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Colombia, China, the UAE, Portugal, Romania, the US and Uruguay.
Pimpirev said Bulgaria had significantly raised the level of its Antarctic research with the acquisition of its research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421). “With our ship sailing to Antarctica, we proved to the world that we are a maritime nation,” he said.
Pimpirev said for the first time, a senior Bulgarian Orthodox cleric, Bishop Kliment, will visit Antarctica to consecrate the Bulgarian St Ivan Rilski Chapel.
The expedition will also carry out Bulgaria’s first underwater archaeology project in Antarctica, alongside projects by ecologists, biologists and geologists.
