Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, commenting in an interview for Nova TV on the two merchant ships struck by drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, said that Bulgaria has requested the assistance of international organizations to survey the sunken vessel using an underwater drone.
Stoyanov said that he hopes the ship that was struck but is still afloat will also be surveyed as soon as possible. Security services are working on two theories, there is no evidence at present whether the drones were Russian or Ukrainian, the Minister added.
Regarding the sunken vessel, Stoyanov stated that it had been traveling from Egypt, via Turkiye, to Romania. Its crew consisted of Syrian nationals. It was carrying wheat. The Minister explained that, according to the data, the vessel sank in about three minutes, which means that it either sustained massive damage from the impact or was carrying a cargo that was explosive.
“We have requested that partner countries provide us with whatever information they have regarding satellite imagery of the incident area,” the Defence Minister added.
Stoyanov said that the intensity of the conflict in the Black Sea is evident, with merchant ships now being targeted. “In this situation, it will be very difficult to maintain shipping operations. At the Consultative Council for National Security, we called on the two warring parties to refrain from attacking merchant ships,” the Minister added.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security, participants agreed that the perpetrators of the attack on the two ships in the Black Sea should be identified. Prime Minister Rumen Radev said after the meeting that there was no threat to Bulgaria’s national security.
