Aleksandra Georgieva, Kimia Alizadeh, and Omid Hosseini won gold medals for Bulgaria at the prestigious Podgorica Open G1 international tournament, the Bulgarian Taekwondo Federation reported on Monday. This marks the national team’s fourth consecutive victory under coaches Davoud Etminani and Ventsislav Sokolov.
Part of the national team was competing in Montenegro, while other team members, Stanislav Mitkov and Stefan Stamenov took part in the Grand Prix series in Paris, accompanied by coach Farzad Zolghadri.
Georgieva, competing in the women’s 49 kg category, began her journey toward the gold medal by facing fellow Bulgarian Ana Maria Georgieva. In the semi-finals, Aleksandra faced UK’s Phoenix Goodman and defeated Poland’s Alicja Krajewska in the fight for the gold medal.
In the 57 kg category, Paris bronze medallist Alizadeh started with victories over Ivana Kraisnik of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Julia Sereda of Poland; in the semifinals, she defeated Spain’s Sesar Vila to compete for the title against Jana Lukic of Serbia.
The third gold medal from the Podgorica Open went to Omid Hosseini, who competed in the men’s 80 kg category. Omid defeated Nino Seremet of Bosnia and Herzegovina and eliminated Mal Sahiti of Kosovo in the semifinals to reach the final against another Bosnian, Nedzad Husic. After the first two rounds were split, Hosseini dominated the decisive third round and claimed the first place for the fourth time in the last three months.
Deya Peeva, competing in the 46 kg category, took home the bronze medal after failing to defeat Spain’s Ana Lopez in the gold medal fight.
The remaining members of the Bulgarian team gained valuable international experience, although they did not advance to the medal rounds.
