A total of 46% of Bulgarians describe their standard of living as “rather low” or “very low”, while 49% regard it as “average” and 4% as “rather high”, according to a nationally representative survey conducted by the Trend polling agency for UBB Asset Management and Finance Academy.
Of those surveyed, 29% describe their standard of living as rather low and 17% as very low. Perceptions of low living standards are considerably more widespread among older people: around two thirds of respondents aged 60 to 70 describe their living standard as rather or very low, with the share exceeding three quarters among those over 70.
Asked what could have the greatest positive effect on their financial situation in the future, 44% point to increasing their income through additional work, while 22% cite saving and 9% investing.
Savings and Financial Resilience
Thirty per cent of respondents say they save part of their income, while 67% do not.
Among those who save, 35% set aside between 6% and 10% of their monthly personal income, while 26% save up to 5%. Six per cent save between 21% and 30% of their income and 2% save more than 30%.
The survey also indicates limited financial buffers among Bulgarian households. Fifty-eight per cent of respondents say they have no money set aside for unexpected circumstances such as job loss, an accident or illness, while 42% report having such an emergency fund.
Among respondents reporting savings, 9% say the money they have set aside would cover their expenses for up to one month, while 23% say it would last between one and three months. Another 17% could cover four to six months of expenses, 12% between seven and 12 months, and 12% for more than a year.
Investment Remains Uncommon
Only 8% of respondents say they invest, compared with 91% who do not.
Investing is more common among people with higher incomes, particularly those with a personal monthly income exceeding EUR 1,000, and among people of working age between 30 and 60, the survey shows.
The findings come against the backdrop of growing aggregate household financial wealth. According to the Allianz Global Wealth Report released in late September, Bulgaria ranked 36th among the world’s wealthiest countries in 2025, with net financial assets of EUR 14,790 per capita.
The report found that Bulgarian households’ financial assets increased by 10% in 2025 to EUR 136.5 billion, a slight slowdown from growth of 11.2% in 2024. The increase was below the 11.2% recorded for Eastern Europe but above the global average of 8.6%.
