At Wednesday’s meeting of the Consultative Council for National Security (CCNS), participants agreed that those responsible for the attack on two merchant ships in the Black Sea should be identified, while Prime Minister Rumen Radev said after the meeting that there was no threat to Bulgaria’s national security. President Iliana Iotova convened the CCNS to discuss the current risks and threats to Bulgaria’s maritime security and critical Infrastructure in the context of the war in Ukraine after two vessels were attacked by maritime and aerial drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. The meeting lasted about five hours.
The CCNS condemns the strikes on merchant ships in the Black Sea as a gross violation of international maritime law, Iotova said, presenting the council participants’ common position after the meeting. According to the President, three quarters of the CCNS members supported a set of recommendations to the executive and legislative branches.
Russia’s war against Ukraine has led to a significant deterioration in the security environment in the Black Sea region, the President said.
“I cannot say that there is an immediate threat to national security. Of course, there are risks – a war is being fought not far from us. There is no direct threat to national security,” Prime Minister Rumen Radev told reporters after the meeting.
Political reactions
Opposition parties questioned whether the CCNS position had actually been adopted, saying that four political groups had not supported it.
Stanislav Anastasov MP of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) said that four parties, including the MRF, opposed the statement that was read, which under the Council’s internal rules means that it did not receive support. ”The issue on which there was no consensus was who the aggressor is, and that is perfectly clear,” he added.
Ivaylo Mirchev MP of Democratic Bulgaria said that it became absolutely clear at the meeting that there are sufficient indications of clear Russian interference in the attack on the two commercial vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea. “I do not remember people at the table who had doubts that Russia was behind this attack,” Mirchev said.
Continue the Change Floor Leader Nikolay Denkov said it made no sense for Ukraine to attack its own ships carrying grain from ports in Romania and Odesa. “There is no logic in Ukraine firing on its own ships, which are transporting grain from the ports of Romania and Odesa,” said Denkov.
Vazrazhdane leader Kostadin Kostadinov voiced concern that the conflict would intensify and that similar incidents could occur, saying that other participants in the council had confirmed those concerns. He left the CCNS meeting before it had concluded.
The parliamentary groups of Progressive Bulgaria and GERB-UDF did not comment to the media after the meeting.
