The analysis based on inspections of prices at major retail chains will be ready within 10 days, Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) Chair Maya Manolova told reporters on Friday before one of the inspections.
The CCP began inspections at retail chains on Friday to establish the actual prices charged and the commercial practices applied by retailers. Inspectors will collect data and prepare an analysis of relevant information on supply prices. Current prices will also be compared with prices on selected earlier dates.
Hundreds of complaints related to the prices of essential food products continue to be filed with the CCP. According to the complaints, there are misleading commercial practices, including imported food products being presented as Bulgarian, while other complaints concern a significant gap between supply prices and prices on store shelves, Manolova said. “We will establish whether there are economic reasons for this,” she added.
The inspections will initially focus on two important groups of goods – dairy products and fruit and vegetables, which have generated the largest number of complaints, Manolova explained.
She specified that the CCP would inspect the five largest retail chains in different cities across the country.
The inspections will continue until October 11, and the retail chains will be given an opportunity to provide explanations regarding the price increases, the CCP Chair said.
According to Manolova, the CCP will also examine the origin and formation of prices and will cooperate with the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.
Manolova recalled that under the applicable legislation, fines for unjustified price increases range from EUR 10,000 to EUR 100,000 for each product.
