“We have collected signatures requesting another extraordinary parliamentary sitting to discuss the pardon of Ognyan Atanasov, known as the Escobar from Petrich,” Continue the Change floor leader Nikolay Denkov told journalists in Parliament.
Responding to comments that the push was election-related, Denkov said: “I assure everyone that even after the elections, we will continue to demand clarification of this information because what we are seeing is a systemic problem with the way pardons are granted in Bulgaria.”
“Over the past week, new information has emerged indicating that the commission operated without a quorum for six consecutive months. We cannot find out what information the medical commission provided, what recommendations were made by the Pardons Commission, or on what grounds the decision was taken. Every attempt to obtain this information has hit a wall,” the MP commented.
“What matters is why information continues to be concealed,” he added.
“We want the extraordinary sitting to take place next Tuesday. We have received support from Democratic Bulgaria and GERB-UDF, while Vazrazhdane did not sign the request,” MP Stoyu Stoev said, adding that the presidential administration was providing information selectively.
“Other MPs claim to have the complete documents, while we are denied access to them. If the information is provided under the Access to Public Information Act, it should be publicly available,” Stoev pointed out.
“The Bulgarian public must clearly understand how presidential powers have been exercised in the past in order to make an informed choice in the elections on Sunday next week,” he said.
“The fact that a statement was made saying that the materials would be sent to the prosecution service, is a clear indication that, if pretrial proceedings are initiated, this will have implications for the use of facts in the public domain, given the ban on disclosing information protected by investigative secrecy,” MP Boyko Rashkov said, referring to Iliana Iotova.
“I heard an MP speak about compassion, but the presidential administration is not a hospital, and the president and vice president are not nurses,” Rashkov remarked.
“Even when a court judgment contains information related to state secrets or espionage, and regardless of whether the hearing was held behind closed doors, the judgment is announced publicly,” he stated.
“As for the health condition of the pardoned drug trafficker, we have grounds to question the medical assessment carried out by the experts mentioned in an interview by Petar Vitanov. I believe the identities of those who signed the medical report should be made known,” Rashkov said.
“We have all seen a video that speaks volumes,” he added.
