Balgarianovinite.com Two anti-drone systems have been delivered and will now be prepared for service, the Defence Ministry said Monday, responding to a BTA inquiry.
The ministry added that personnel must familiarize themselves with the equipment before it is commissioned.
The systems were purchased from the US company Axon.
Two more anti-drone systems are expected to arrive shortly, the ministry added.
Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said last week that Bulgaria needed new systems for detecting and destroying aerial vehicles and that they should be purchased as quickly as possible. His comments followed a drone incursion into Bulgarian airspace on August 8.
“We are working intensively under the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument to purchase such systems,” Stoyanov said. He added that around 10 systems would be acquired and that the systems currently had a range of three to five kilometres.
One of the projects under SAFE concerns the acquisition of systems for detecting and countering unmanned aerial vehicles.
At the end of July, Parliament ratified the loan agreement under the SAFE mechanism. All projects under the instrument must be completed by December 31, 2030.
The drone came down 200 metres from the former Kardam border checkpoint between Bulgaria and Romania. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said it was a Ukrainian non-combat drone designed to operate alongside other drones. The Interior and Defence ministries guarded the site, deployed the systems available to the Interior Ministry and placed critical points under additional protection.
Bulgaria was still awaiting a formal response from Ukraine and an Interior Ministry expert assessment, Stoyanov said Friday. Ukraine said the drone had not been deliberately sent towards Bulgarian territory. Stoyanov added that GPS interference or a control-system failure might have caused the incident, which is under the jurisdiction of the Military Prosecution Office.
