Balgarianovinite.com Interviewed on NovaTV’s morning show on Saturday, caretaker Deputy Prime Minister for European Funding Maria Nedina said that active negotiations with the European Commission are underway and that there have been positive signals suggesting the May 4 deadline for establishing an anti-corruption commission and a mechanism for overseeing the prosecutor general could be slightly extended.
Commenting on public finances, Nedina noted that investment spending has increased, while revenues have declined. “This is due to the fact that we are currently at the final stage of the Recovery and Resilience Plan and the investment programme, with pension indexation also having an impact,” she added. Nedina recalled that Bulgaria still has EUR 2.5 billion to receive under the plan. In her words, it is crucial for the next government to carry out the required reforms by the end of August to avoid losing the funds, which would negatively affect the budget deficit.
Nedina firmly rejected claims that returning the unspent EUR 1.4 billion from the Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB) to the state budget would halt funding for energy-efficiency renovations, municipalities, or European projects, or put at risk the EUR 250 million allocated under the plan. She said that EUR 246.5 million under the energy-efficiency renovation programme is still being disbursed through the BDB and remains fully accessible.
She added that the same applies to the municipal investment programme, under which the bank is expected to distribute EUR 460 million. The EUR 1.4 billion in question is unrelated to these programmes and will remain available to the next government, Nedina said.
