The cargo ship EMIL, which was left adrift after being struck by a drone near Odesa, is being towed towards the Bosphorus by a Turkish tugboat, Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev told the media on Monday in Burgas, on the Black Sea, adding that the vessel had left Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone and search and rescue area.
“According to the information we received this morning, the vessel has been taken in tow by a Turkish tugboat. It has never entered our waters. We did everything possible to ensure that it was moved out of our exclusive economic zone and our search and rescue area,” Peev said.
The Minister said the tugboat had been provided by a Turkish company and that EMIL was now very close to the Bosphorus.
On October 4, Bulgarian Air Force and Navy personnel said that they had conducted reconnaissance operations to locate a drifting cargo ship in the Black Sea. At the time, the vessel was approximately 40 nautical miles east of Cape Shabla.
EMIL was struck by a drone near Odesa on August 5, causing a fire and technical failures that left it unable to manoeuvre. The crew subsequently abandoned the vessel.
Following the incident, the ship drifted through Romania’s exclusive economic zone, moving south towards Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone under the influence of sea currents.
In its October 4 statement, the Defence Ministry said the relevant Bulgarian authorities were continuing to monitor the vessel and remained ready to take action if circumstances changed.
