Balgarianovinite.com Europe is well positioned to capitalize on the rise of artificial intelligence thanks to its strong talent, innovative businesses and institutions, OpenAI Chief Economist Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), on Tuesday. Chatterji is one of the speakers at the annual forum of the European Central Bank, which is being held from June 29 to July 1, in Sintra, Portugal.
“Europe is well positioned to benefit from the intelligence age. With its strong talent base, innovative businesses and institutions, it has the opportunity to use AI to boost productivity, support new forms of work and create opportunities for people and businesses across the continent,” Chatterji said.
His remarks accompanied the release of a new OpenAI report examining how artificial intelligence is expected to reshape the European Union’s labour market.
According to the report, around 12% of EU employment falls into what are called growth occupations, jobs that AI is likely to create or expand rather than eliminate. Another 14% of jobs in the EU are classified as having high automation potential, while 27% of EU jobs will require significant reorganization. The remaining 47% of jobs are in a category that’s less likely to face imminent disruption from current AI capabilities.
The report underlines that these categories should not be interpreted as forecasts of job losses. Instead, they are intended to help employers, education providers and policymakers prepare for the growing adoption of artificial intelligence. The analysis is based on the European Skills, Competences, Qualifications and Occupations (ESCO) classification and Eurostat data, while also taking into account regulatory requirements, the need for human oversight, physical presence and public trust across different occupations.
Earlier on Tuesday, speaking during a panel discussion at the ECB annual forum, Chatterji said the main challenge facing businesses is no longer the development of increasingly capable AI models, but their successful integration into real-world workflows.
According to Chatterji, OpenAI’s leading models are already capable of performing certain office tasks at a level comparable to, or even exceeding, that of humans. However, he noted that most organisations are still using only a fraction of their potential. Successfully deploying AI requires commitment from senior leadership and a fundamental redesign of business processes, rather than simply introducing a new technology, he said.
