Balgarianovinite.com Videos and photographs circulated by the media and on social media clearly show that people in Strumyani were able to interact freely with Prime Minister Rumen Radев, accompanying and filming him as he inspected the restoration work, the Cabinet’s press centre said on Saturday in response to “claims by political leaders that during Radev’s visit to Strumyani, his security detail isolated him from citizens and media representatives”. Neither citizens nor media representatives were prevented from meeting and speaking with the Prime Minister or putting their questions to him during the visit, the statement also said.
“The footage also shows that Ms Gergana Petrova herself accompanied and filmed the Prime Minister without being subjected to any restrictions,” the Government Information Service added.
Petrova, a local activist, was arrested in handcuffs during a government delegation’s visit to the flood-hit village of Strumyani on Friday, prompting demands for an explanation from the Interior Ministry by Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev and the Association of European Journalists – Bulgaria (AEJ-Bulgaria). A video of the arrest was posted on Facebook and media outlets.
Following inquiries by the press, the Blagoevgrad Directorate of the Interior said that the police acted on a request by the National Service for Protection (NSP) for assistance in identifying a person who repeatedly attempted to breach the security zone in the immediate vicinity of a protected person. According to NSP, the woman tried to enter a designated press area but failed to show an ID or a press card. The woman was coercively taken to the nearest police department for verification of her identity. A warning statement was issued for violation of public order because she did not have an ID on her, which is a requirement under the Bulgarian Identity Documents Act, after which the woman was released.
The Government Press Service added that the circumstances surrounding what happened between Petrova and law enforcement officers after the Prime Minister left Strumyani are being investigated by the relevant institutions, as Radev had also called for. Respect for the facts, the law and ethical conduct apply to everyone, regardless of their position or public role, the statement also reads.
The head of the Blagoevgrad Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Iliyan Tuparov, was removed from his position by the Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev on Friday over the actions by Directorate officers. “The Director did not report the case in a timely manner, while the response of the officers on the ground exceeded what was necessary,” Interior Minister Demerdzhiev said, quoted in the press release. “Guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of Bulgarian citizens is a key priority for the Ministry of Interior,” Demerdzhiev added.
