Balgarianovinite.com President Iliana Iotova said on Friday she will run for president in the upcoming election in November. Her candidacy will be put forward by a nomination committee. Iotova broke the news in an interview with Bulgarian National Television.
Asked which political party she will seek support from, Iotova said: “A year and a half ago, when I was asked a similar question, I said I would run when I felt I had the support of the people. Having made that decision today, I believe I have the support of many people in Bulgaria.”
Asked whether she expects the backing of Prime Minister Rumen Radev, Iotova replied that the decision rests entirely with him and his party.
Iotova was vice president under Radev until he left the post of president to run in the parliamentary elections on April 19.
“But what matters to me is the support of people from different walks of life,” Iotova said. “Not only well-known public figures or prominent personalities. What matters to me is the support of that majority of Bulgarian citizens who meet me every day in the street, at the supermarket, in the park or at the dry-cleaner’s. They tell me, ‘Madam President, don’t give up, we are with you.’ In fact, quite a few of those people will be members of my nomination committees, both the central one and the local committees.”
She declined to answer programme presenter Boyko Vassilev’s question about who will be her running mate for vice president.
