The health of Bulgarian citizens and the quality and safety of the medical care provided are a priority for the State, Health Minister Katya Ivkova said here on Wednesday. She was speaking at a joint briefing with Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev at the Council of Ministers in connection with inspections at St George University Hospital in Plovdiv (South Central Bulgaria).
Six people have been charged and three have been detained for up to 72 hours in connection with the investigation at St George Hospital, Vanya Hristova, Plovdiv’s district prosecutor, told reporters on Tuesday. Forty searches of individuals and premises were carried out in Plovdiv, Karlovo and Krichim, resulting in the detention of six doctors and four nurses.
“Yesterday [Tuesday], you were informed about the shocking findings from the initial inspections carried out at two clinics at St George Hospital in Plovdiv. The main findings so far concern violations related to clinical pathways, that is, fictitious hospital admissions, high-cost medicinal products, compromised clinical trials, as well as other irregularities involving medical certificates,” Minister Ivkova said.
She added that procedural and investigative actions were continuing and that evidence and witness statements were being collected.
Ivkova said she had instructed the Medical Supervision Executive Agency, the regional health inspectorates, the Bulgarian Drug Agency and the National Health Insurance Fund in writing to launch inspections in all 28 regions of the country, amid concerns that the situation at the Plovdiv hospital may not be an isolated case. The Minister said the State must fulfil its role by guaranteeing the safety and health of Bulgarian citizens, as well as ensuring that public funds are spent appropriately.
“In the letter I sent yesterday [Tuesday], I requested that by Tuesday I be provided with a timetable for the inspections and the methodology to be used,” the Health Minister said. She added that the resources of the National Health Information System would be used to ensure objectivity and enable cross-checks of all available documentation.
Ivkova also said that active work was under way with the Ministry of Finance to increase the salaries of young doctors from 2027.
