The Bulgarian Health Ministry has called on pharmaceutical companies to help improve access to naloxone, a life-saving medicine used in cases of opioid overdose, the Ministry said on Wednesday.
Amid the growing threat posed by fentanyl and other dangerous opioids, the Ministry urged companies holding marketing authorizations for naloxone-containing medicines to take steps to establish maximum prices for these products in Bulgaria, with the aim of improving access to treatment and protecting patients.
To do so, companies must submit applications to the National Council on Prices and Reimbursement of Medicinal Products.
According to the Ministry, the procedure is simpler than that for including a medicine in the Positive Drug List, requiring fewer documents and a lower administrative fee.
In April, the Health Ministry announced that all emergency medical centres in Bulgaria had been supplied with naloxone, an antidote used to reverse opioid overdoses.
Following donations from two companies, the available supply exceeded 2,400 ampoules, enabling emergency medical teams to respond promptly in critical situations, the Ministry said.
