International Conference on Epigenetics and Rare Diseases Opens

An international conference on epigenetics, molecular medicine and rare diseases opened at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) on Tuesday, the Academy’s press centre said.
The event, titled Unlocking the Secrets of the Epigenome: New Perspectives in Molecular Medicine and Rare Diseases, is being held in the Academy’s Prof. Marin Drinov Hall. It is organized by the Academy’s Rumen Tsanev Institute of Molecular Biology.
The conference is part of the EU-funded AEGIS-IMB ERA Chair project.
Participants include leading scientists, doctors, researchers and representatives of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors from a range of countries. They will discuss the latest advances in epigenetics, chromatin biology, molecular medicine and rare diseases, and how scientific discoveries can be translated into new diagnostic methods, technologies and personalized therapies.
International speakers represent leading research institutions and universities, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) in India; France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) in Grenoble and the University of Grenoble; the University of Crete and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB-FORTH) in Greece; the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) and the University of Antwerp in Belgium; the University of Essex in the UK; the Izmir Biomedicine and Genome Center in Turkiye; Trinity College Dublin in Ireland; the University of Würzburg in Germany; and Moores Cancer Center at the University of California San Diego in the US.
JNCASR researcher Tapas Kumar Kundu, an internationally recognized expert in epigenetics and molecular biology, will also take part. His work on gene expression regulation and chromatin organization contributes to the development of new approaches to treating cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
Bulgarian participants include scientists and specialists from BAS, St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, the medical universities in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna, the National Genetic Laboratory, healthcare facilities, diagnostic laboratories and biotechnology companies.
A featured panel discussion, From Research to Medical Practice: Innovations in Rare Diseases and Epigenetics, will address the challenges of applying scientific discoveries in clinical practice. The programme also includes a poster session, research presentations and awards for young scientists. The conference forms part of the AEGIS-IMB ERA Chair project’s efforts to strengthen the research capacity of the Rumen Tsanev Institute of Molecular Biology and develop international partnerships in epigenetics and molecular medicine.
Epigenetics is a branch of biology that studies heritable changes in gene activity without alterations to the DNA sequence. The sequence remains unchanged, while factors such as diet, lifestyle and the environment can influence whether genes are switched on or off.
