Iva Mihaylova, who is on trial in North Macedonia over a fatal road accident, is at Sofia’s Pirogov Emergency Hospital, Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said on Tuesday. She is there with her lawyer.
Mihaylova holds dual citizenship of Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia. A crash in North Macedonia in October 2025 left one person dead and several others injured, including Mihaylova. Her documents were seized from her by the authorities after the accident, preventing her from seeking medical treatment in Bulgaria. On July 6, the Basic Court in Kocani opened proceedings against Mihaylova, who is charged with a serious road traffic violation in the Republic of North Macedonia. The Bulgarian State has put up a considerable effort to convince the authorities in Skopje to allow her to travel to Bulgaria for treatment or permit a Bulgarian medical team to examine her.
Speaking to the press on the sidelines of an international security conference, the Interior Minister said that Mihaylova will be questioned about when, how and where she crossed the Bulgarian border.
Approached by BTA, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said it had no prior knowledge of the actions of Mihaylova, her family and lawyer that led up to her arrival in Bulgaria, and was not involved in these actions. Her lawyer had consequently established contact with the Foreign Ministry. “We understand the concern of Iva’s family for her health. The most important thing now is for her to receive the medical treatment she needs,” the Foreign Ministry said.
Speaking on Nova TV later on Monday, Mihaylova said that she and her lawyer “crossed the border and came back [to Bulgaria] absolutely legally”. She said she doesn’t feel well which is why she decided to take that step.
She said she has been subject to repressions on account of her Bulgarian roots. “For a year and several days, I was put to repressions because of my Bulgarian origin. I will yet to decide whether I will go back. I am happy to be here and to finally feel safe. During the past year, I felt support: the entire country was behind me.”
Her lawyer Nikolai Dimitrov said Mihaylova contacted him Sunday and told him she was unwell. “That is why we decided to bring her to Bulgaria. We made arrangements for her to be examined by Bulgarian doctors and that was coordinated between the two countries. […] We crossed the border, we showed our documents and the people on North Macedonia’s side were aware that it was Iva Mihaylova but nobody said anything,” he said.
He added that his client would cooperate with the judicial authorities in North Macedonia “but she has to take care of her own health now”.
He also said that the Foreign Ministry didn’t have to know in advance “because it is working by diplomatic channels”. “Our approach was not very diplomatic but we had to act this way. Nothing would have been worse in terms of consequence as her remaining without adequate treatment in her home down with two patrol cars outside and illegal entries in her home only because she is Bulgarian.”
He said they would stay in Bulgaria for as long as the doctors decide and when she feels sure she would not be harassed for her Bulgarian roots in North Macedonia.
The Interior Minister said earlier that the authorities will assess whether Mihaylova needs protection and will provide it if necessary.
He added that no one from North Macedonia had contacted the Bulgarian authorities.
