Joe Manchin Slams ‘Vile’ Vivek Ramaswamy Ad in Feisty Video: ‘This Is What Happens When the System Incentivizes Bad Behavior’ 2026

Former Democratic-turned-independent lawmaker Joe Manchin bashed Vivek Ramaswamy (R) for his “vile” attack ad against Amy Acton (D) in the Ohio gubernatorial race in a video posted to X on Saturday morning.

Manchin then used the bulk of his 68-second clip to argue it was the latest ugly sign both Democrats and Republicans are not trotting out their best candidates — an argument that led to many progressives on social media skewering him for turning the ad into a “both sides” issue. More on that in a moment.

“The disgusting attack ad in the Ohio governor’s race is vile,” Manchin said. “It points to a much bigger problem in politics: the political parties don’t care about the character or integrity of their candidates who are seeking the public’s confidence to serve anymore. They just want the majority to give them the power, no matter what it takes.”

The former West Virginia Senator continued:

Public service used to be the most noblest of all professions, and it was truly a calling. These days, we can’t get quality candidates to put their names on the ballot, because politics has become so toxic.

This is what happens when the system incentivizes bad behavior and pushes the most extreme candidates out of a controlled primary to the general election. We can’t continue to think that we’re going to change the system, when the parties are supporting and protecting candidates with such a lack of character and integrity.

His video comes a few days after Ramaswamy kicked off a multi-day media frenzy by running an ad where Acton’s estranged mom called her a “liar” and urged Ohioans not to vote for her.

The ad was condemned by many on the left and the right, with a number of people pointing out Acton cut off contact with her mom decades ago after she was sexually abused by her stepfather. And hours after Ramaswamy ran his ad, Acton responded with her own video where he brother praised her for defending him when they were both children.

President Donald Trump then defended the ad, saying it was “powerful.” 

“The Press is trying to convince everyone that this Ad is bad, because it’s so good!” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Who wouldn’t use such an Ad? I would, it’s called, ‘hitting pay dirt.’”

On Saturday, a whole bunch of progressives weren’t thrilled with Manchin’s response to it.
