Texas state Sen. Angel Paxton (R) raised eyebrows over the weekend when she dropped an ad supporting the Republican “team” in Texas, but did not directly name her estranged husband, Ken Paxton, as a candidate she is supporting.

“I’m Texas Senator Angela Paxton. People have asked my thoughts about this election, and turns out I have some,” began Paxton, who filed for divorce from her husband, the sitting attorney general and GOP U.S. Senate nominee, citing “biblical grounds.”
“Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. In a general election, it’s not as much about the individual players on the team. It’s about getting the whole team across the finish line. Either we hold every Republican seat, or we hand the future of Texas to the other team. That’s why I’m voting for the Republican ticket on November 3rd. Let’s hold the line together,” Angela Paxton added.

Mrs. Paxton’s mention of the “elephant in the room” and suggestion that some “individual players” might be less worthy of support than others quickly led to pundits and journalists highlighting the ad and arguing it may not be the resounding endorsement Ken Paxton’s campaign was hoping for.
“What’s the ‘elephant in the room’ mentioned here. Google Ken Paxton Angela Paxton to find out — this is legitimately such a strange ad, inviting people who have no knowledge of this to just see what’s going on,” wrote CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski.
Paxton’s campaign has been long dogged by his past corruption scandals, impeachment as attorney general, and personal issues. He made waves last week when The New York Times published audio of him claiming President Donald Trump’s GOP convention in Texas hurt his campaign, which has been trailing Democrat James Talarico in the polls.
Reason’s Billy Binion also shared the ad and wrote, “This is an accidental ad for political homelessness. A woman urging voters to support a man who broke his marriage vows and publicly humiliated her, because otherwise ‘the other team’ may win. Counterpoint: Some things are more important than political football.”
