Labour inspectors identified more than 27,300 violations of labour legislation during over 5,800 inspections carried out in the construction sector in the first nine months of 2026, according to data from the General Labour Inspectorate’s control activities, cited by the institution’s press centre on Friday.
Nearly 20,000 of the violations concerned the provision of safe working conditions, while 7,190 involved breaches related to labour relations. Labour Inspectorate data showed that falls are the cause of serious work accidents in 40% – 50% of cases. According to the Executive Director of the General Labour Inspectorate, Ekaterina Asenova, the most common violations leading to this type of accident are unsecured openings in building and structural elements such as walls, floor slabs, elevator shafts, roofs and others.
Of the more than 2,600 workers found across all sectors to be working without an employment contract, over 1,080 were in the construction sector. Labour inspectors also ordered the suspension of construction sites, machinery and equipment more than 660 times. Across all sectors, the measure was applied more than 770 times. The inspectorate said the measure is preventive and is intended to reduce the risk of serious occupational accidents.
A total of 2,703 administrative violations were drawn up in the construction sector. Fines of nearly EUR 1.7 million have been issued.
Labour inspectors also investigated 65 workplace accidents in the construction sector, 14 of which were fatal.
From November 1, the Labour Inspectorate will begin inspections at winter resorts, BTA reported in early September.
