Meeting with supporters in Varna on her campaign for the presidential elections Monday, Iliana Iotova spoke of dialogue, unity and the need for a negotiated solution to the Ukraine war. “Together with Kiril Valchev, we are asking for your trust so that there is no more hatred, division, makeshift arrangements, coalitions without principles, or policies that are supposedly implemented by state institutions but without statehood,” Iotova said.
She reiterated her position that there can be no military solution to the war in Ukraine; negotiations must be held, Iotova said. In her view, Europe should have its own proposal for these negotiations and for how this conflict should end. In her words, Bulgaria has no reason to participate in a “coalition of the willing”; it has a sufficiently strong will and voice to participate where it belongs – in the European Parliament, the European Commission and the European Council.
Iotova was adamant that as long as she is president, no Bulgarian soldier will be sent to Ukraine. She added that her plan, as a first step, is for all Black Sea countries to find a diplomatic way as soon as possible to sign an agreement on safe navigation in the Black Sea. For her, this is a policy of small steps, not big promises.
“We want all institutions to work together – that is why we are opening the door of the presidential institution; we want it to be the highest state office, above party politics, above politics,” Iotova also said, stressing that there is nothing more wrong than for Bulgarian institutions to once again stand against one another. When there is normal dialogue, when we have chosen the right direction for the country, every quarrel for its own sake is counterproductive, she said.
