Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) leader Delyan Peevski on Wednesday welcomed President Iliana Iotova’s decision to convene the Consultative Council on National Security (CCNS), while stressing that his comments should not be interpreted as political support for her.
“I am impressed with Mrs Iotova. Yesterday, for the first time, she became president, or began becoming president,” Peevski told journalists in Parliament.
He contrasted Iotova’s decision with the position of Prime Minister Rumen Radev, her predecessor as president, claiming that Radev had sought to prevent her from convening the Council.
“It was the right step. This should not be interpreted as support for her. We will not support anyone in the first round, and after that we will think about it, but it was the right step. I am very pleased,” Peevski said.
Iotova has convened the CCNS for Wednesday afternoon to discuss current risks and threats to Bulgaria’s maritime security and critical infrastructure in the context of the war in Ukraine.
Peevski also renewed allegations concerning the procurement of road safety barriers, accusing ministers Ivan Demerdzhiev and Ivan Shishkov and Deputy Prime Minister Galab Donev of covering up irregularities at the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works and state-owned road construction company Avtomagistrali.
He alleged that uncertified barriers were being procured under unclear procedures and claimed that people connected with Progressive Bulgaria who now hold senior government positions were involved.
Peevski offered no evidence for the allegations in his remarks to journalists.
He further accused the Government of widespread wrongdoing, saying that his party had teams monitoring every ministry and alleging that those in power were primarily concerned with filling their party coffers.
