Nato will be sending additional assets to the Black Sea region, including support for surveillance, reconnaissance, and forensics, Alliance spokesperson Allison Hart said in a message on X on October 20.

Nato Ambassadors met in the North Atlantic Council on October 20 to discuss security in the Black Sea, Hart said.
“Nato has already strengthened our posture along the eastern flank, including with counter-drone capabilities,” she said.

The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, has convened a meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defence, which will take place on October 22 at 6pm, the Romanian President’s office said.

During the meeting, the security implications generated by the incidents in the Black Sea will be analysed and measures to strengthen the response capacity to protect Romania’s territorial waters and critical maritime infrastructure will be evaluated.
During the Council meeting, other current issues in the field of national security will also be analysed, the statement said.
Dan, in a message on X on October 21, said that following his meeting in Brussels last week with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte and Bulgarian Prime Minister Roumen Radev, the North Atlantic Council had met yesterday to assess latest developments in the Black Sea and discuss concrete steps to strengthen security and protect navigation, trade and energy infrastructure.
“The situation remains serious, as commercial ships have been attacked and sunk close to the shores of Romania and Bulgaria, and seafarers have been killed, injured or are still missing,” Dan said.
“These attacks are unacceptable and must stop, he said.
“A clear takeaway from yesterday’s meeting is that Allied solidarity with our countries is rock solid.”
The commitment to defend every inch of Allied territory, including our waters and airspace, is shared by the whole Alliance, Dan said.
“Romania brought to the table the direct message that we expect stronger support through additional counter-drone, surveillance, reconnaissance and forensics capabilities, and a further adapted and strengthened Nato posture in the region,” he said.
These are essential to protecting lives, global trade and critical infrastructure, and to keeping the Black Sea safe and open, Dan said.

He said that Romania is doing its part, as on October 17 when two Romanian Air Force F-16s engaged and shot down two drones that had illegally entered its national airspace over Romanian territorial waters off Sulina.
“Both were neutralised within minutes of crossing into our airspace. I commend our pilots for their professionalism and speed of response,” Dan said.
“Romania’s response will remain measured and firm, we will defend our airspace and territorial waters at all times, together with Allies.”
The security of the Black Sea is essential not only for Romania and the littoral states, but also for the whole of Europe and for international trade, he said.
“Romania will continue to work closely with Allies and partners to ensure freedom of navigation and the protection of critical infrastructure in the region,” Dan said.
