Some 38.8 tonnes of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, were found during joint inspections of three warehouses at the same address in Sofia, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency said on Monday.
Inspectors from the Sofia Regional Food Safety Directorate and representatives of the Sofia Customs Territorial Directorate carried out the checks in connection with a delivery of nitrous oxide.
At the first site, a wholesale food warehouse, inspectors found 10 pallets containing a total of 5,760 kg of nitrous oxide. The CMR transport document (waybill), however, listed six pallets of 236 units each. No documents certifying the origin and safety of the batches were presented, and the transport and sale of the product were prohibited.
At a second warehouse, operated by another company, inspectors found 21 pallets containing approximately 23,000 kg of nitrous oxide. Documents showed that the product had been purchased from a company not registered under the Food Act. The entire quantity was withdrawn from sale.
A further 11 pallets containing approximately 10,000 kg of nitrous oxide were found at a third warehouse at the same address. No documents proving the product’s origin and traceability were presented, and its transport and sale were prohibited.
The total quantity found at the three sites was approximately 38.76 tonnes. All containers were labelled as intended for use in food products.
