While merchant ships are being attacked by Russia with drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, Prime Minister Rumen Radev is seeking help from NATO and the EU over the crisis in the Black Sea, but at the same time welcomes the deal between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which leading European officials consider a concession to Russia, Democratic Bulgaria (DB) MP and Yes, Bulgaria Co-Chair Ivaylo Mirchev said, quoted by DB’s press centre on Wednesday.
Mirchev’s comments came after earlier in the day in Brussels Radev responded to a question on the US decision to roll back sanctions against Russian diesel: “You know what is our problem right now in Europe? High fuel prices. Any step in reducing fuel prices and to guarantee our competitiveness, we’ll appreciate it.”
“At the meeting of European leaders in Brussels, Radev expressed support for the deal on Russian diesel. At the same time, European leaders overwhelmingly describe it as a ‘gift to Putin’, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson warns that it increases Russia’s ability to finance the war, while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni calls it a dangerous move that legitimises Moscow and weakens sanctions,” Mirchev stressed.
The MP considers the economic rationale behind the deal between Trump and Putin particularly questionable, as the initially agreed 300,000 tonnes of diesel amount to approximately two hours of global consumption. “Russia is facing serious difficulties with its refining capacity. There is no guarantee of a lasting reduction in fuel prices, but there is real sanctions relief and the possibility of additional revenue for the Kremlin,” Mirchev explained.
“That is why Democratic Bulgaria is proposing concrete action rather than declarations – the establishment of a Black Sea shield within NATO, through joint action by Bulgaria, Romania and Turkiye, enhanced radar surveillance, additional allied forces along the coast, fighter aircraft and helicopters to combat drones,” Mirchev added.
The political formation is also calling for the establishment of an inter-agency unit under the Security Council to assess and manage the economic risks arising from the crisis, including those affecting supplies of fuel, grain and other strategic goods. Mirchev recalled that DB had already proposed compensation of 20 euro cents per litre, to be financed through Lukoil’s excess profits and additional VAT revenue.
“Bulgaria needs protection for shipping, security for the economy and a consistent policy as an ally,” Mirchev concluded.
