Speaking to reporters in Parliament on Tuesday, Progressive Bulgaria Floor Leader Petar Vitanov commented on the latest reports of drone attacks that took place in the Black Sea near Bulgaria’s coast. He said that Bulgaria is fully adhering to NATO protocol and added that Prime Minister Rumen Radev and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will talk later on Tuesday to identify the measures that need to be taken.
Earlier Tuesday, Radev reported the latest drone attacks and called an emergency meeting of the Security Council under the Council of Ministers.
When asked what the authorities should do, Vitanov warned that Bulgarian institutions cannot resolve this issue on their own, as a pan-European response and a pan-European initiative are needed. He added: “As long as this war continues, even if we stop 99 drones, the 100th will strike.”
Vitanov noted that Bulgaria has raised the issue of Black Sea security at a European level. He said that the country lacks defences against drones and added that even Ukraine and Russia have that problem. According to him, “there is no effective way of dealing with drones; there are NATO programmes in which Bulgaria participates”.
He said: “Following the first incident, we pointed out that logic suggests these were Russian drones. I now believe this has been confirmed.” He noted that Radev had stated that Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova will be summoned. When asked whether the Russian Ambassador should have been summoned immediately after the first incident, Vitanov said: “This is a cumulative process, as we did not have definitive evidence regarding the drone’s origin, only assumptions, conjectures and working hypotheses.” He added that, following the latest incident, it is now high time to summon Mitrofanova.
