Prosecutors Vote to Elect Four Members of Supreme Judicial Council 2026

Prosecutors across Bulgaria are voting Saturday to elect four members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) from the professional quota. A total of 1,567 prosecutors are eligible to vote, choosing from among 25 candidates, the SJC announced.
Voting runs from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Ballot papers will be used at 29 polling stations across the country, corresponding to the number and locations of the district courts. Three polling stations have been set up in Sofia.
After 6:00 p.m., the members of each polling station commission will open the ballot box, count the ballots, determine their validity and draw up an official record of the results. For the first time, the process will be recorded and monitored by video, with the footage streamed live on the SJC’s website. If local video recording is interrupted, the count must be suspended until recording is restored, for a maximum of 30 minutes.
Immediately after the polling station commission’s chair and members sign the official record, a scanned copy must be sent to the election commission by email, and in any event no later than 9:00 p.m. By 11:00 p.m., the chair of the election commission is expected to rule on the validity of the election and announce the results for each candidate, as well as the names of those elected to the SJC.
On 17 October, the prosecutors’ general assembly was held, during which the candidates presented their platforms and answered questions from their colleagues.
The judges’ general assembly is scheduled for 31 October, with voting to take place on 7 November. Investigators will hold their general assembly on 14 November, followed by voting on 21 November.
