None of the candidates for the prosecutors’ quota on the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) received the required number of votes to be elected in Saturday’s ballot, the Election Commission said. Therefore, a run-off will be held on Sunday, October 25, when prosecutors across the country will vote again.
The decision on the election may be appealed.
The magistrates had to choose from 25 candidates. A total of 1,567 prosecutors were eligible to vote, and 1,363 cast their ballots.
Voting was conducted using paper ballots at 29 polling stations across the country, corresponding to the number and locations of the district courts.
The opening of ballot boxes at the respective polling stations, the counting of ballots, the verification of their validity and the drawing up of a protocol recording the results were carried out under video recording and surveillance. The footage was streamed live on the SJC website and the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) website.
BTA is covering the election of Supreme Judicial Council members from the National Assembly quota, as well as those elected by judges, prosecutors and investigating magistrates, in its ongoing coverage section, “New Supreme Judicial Council”.
