Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Ivan Shishkov commented here on Monday that Avtomagistrali CEO Ivan Kunev had resigned for personal reasons and had not been under any pressure. “I learned that the CEO had resigned for personal reasons; he did not inform me. There was no problem,” Shishkov explained, adding that he did not want to intrude on anyone’s personal life.
“There was neither a conflict nor any kind of problem. Everyone has the right to personal reasons, and we should respect those personal reasons,” the Minister stated. “The work is indeed very demanding, very intense; everyone has to weigh their options. I hope the issue is not a more serious, personal one. I wish him a speedy resolution to his problems,” Shishkov added.
Earlier on Monday, the Road Safety Institute said in a press release that Kunev had quit over disagreement with the way motorway guardrails are being replaced, as well as with the actions of Minister Shishkov. Avtomagistrali was under pressure to install guardrails without presenting certificates, without installation instructions, without design plans, and without contracts, the press release reads. According to the Institute’s information, the guardrails were manufactured by a Bursa-based Turkish company.
Kunev was appointed CEO of the State-owned Avtomagistrali motorway construction company in mid-July. Back then, the composition of the Avtomagistrali Board of Directors was reshuffled by order of the Regional Minister pending a competitive selection process.
