No seawater pollution linked to the drone attacks on two ships has been detected along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, the Ministry of Environment and Water said on Friday.
Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova-Blagova ordered emergency seawater checks after the two ships were struck by drones east of Byala. Experts from the Black Sea Region Basin Directorate in Varna and the Executive Environment Agency’s regional laboratories collected seawater samples at three locations along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, the ministry said.
Samples were taken from Bolata Bay in Kavarna Municipality; the area around the fishing and yachting harbour and Cape Sveti Atanas in Byala, Varna Region; and Paradise Bay in Sozopol.
No oil slicks were observed during the checks, and the seawater appeared clean and clear. Laboratory tests found no petroleum product levels above the applicable limits in the samples. The results supported the conclusion that the incident had caused no pollution from petroleum products, the ministry added.
The ministry said the laboratory results were also assessed taking into account the distance between the incident site and the sampling points. Deviations in some physicochemical parameters detected near Sozopol could not be linked to the incident, given that the sampling point was approximately 150 km from the stricken ships and the findings of an on-site inspection.
The ministry continues to monitor seawater conditions and will take any necessary action if there are indications of an environmental risk.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said two ships had been attacked at around 03:00 by sea and aerial drones in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
