Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian school student Elitsa Teneva received one of two individual medals at Space Camp Turkiye, an international educational programme for children aged between 11 and 15, held in the Turkish city of Izmir. The camp was hosted by a learning establishment designed under a NASA concept, Bulgaria’s Centre for Creative Training (CCT) reported on August 24.
Elitsa, who attends the private Pythagoras Secondary School in Sofia, earned the distinction for her outstanding presentation skills, active teamwork and an unwavering passion for science, setting her apart among young people from around the world. She gave presentations on two scientific topics during the camp, one exploring the relationship between space and the world’s oceans, and the other examining the functionality of a favourite children’s toy under lunar gravity.
Elitsa said: “They award you for striving to be a team player, showing curiosity about space and having good presentation skills. It is a real honour for me to be a Space Camp medallist, and this shows that you should follow your dreams and never give up.”
She is a CCT scholarship recipient, and her participation in the programme was made possible with financial support from the “Fantastico By You” Foundation.
At the space camp, the students met American commercial astronaut Chris Sembroski, who is also an aerospace engineer and a US Air Force veteran. Sembroski was on SpaceX’s historic Inspiration4 mission. He told the young people about his journey from being an instructor at the same space camp to flying into orbit, and urged them to look after Earth and not be afraid to pursue their dreams.
Elitsa’s achievement is part of an exceptionally strong performance by the Bulgarian delegation throughout the current season, which has brought them a total of three individual medals. Alongside Elitsa’s award, 14-year-old Martina Duykova of the 22nd Georgi S. Rakovski School of Foreign Languages and 14-year-old Kaloyan Stefanov of the First Private Mathematics School were presented with the prestigious Outstanding Camper medal.
Meanwhile, at Space Camp USA in Huntsville, Alabama, 17-year-old Kristian Dimitrov, a student at the 119th Acad. Mihail Arnaudov Secondary School in Sofia, won the Right Stuff medal. Kristian was prepared for his participation in the programme by Tatyana Ivanova, a Space Camp Turkiye alumna who is studying aerospace engineering in the US, the CCT said.
