Balgarianovinite.com Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 20th edition of the National Thracian Folklore Festival Bogorodichna Stupka in the resort village of Starozagorski Bani on Saturday, President Iliana Iotova said that this festival is magic because it embodies the magic of Bulgarian folklore, folklore that makes Bulgarians proud. It is the magic of folk songs, traditional dances, customs and traditions, she said.
Iotova said that when people talk about folklore, they usually think of the melodies, songs and music from Bulgaria’s different regions. But, she added, the entirety of Bulgaria can be found in the lyrics of folk songs and in the country’s traditional art.
“That is where our history lives, as well as the entire rich palette of the human soul. There are songs about love, sorrow, happiness, glory and heroes. Everything is there – the wisdom of the Bulgarian people. That is why we cherish our folklore so deeply. It gives us strength in the most difficult challenges and hardest moments, and gives us the confidence and pride to be Bulgarian,” the President said.
She added that the most important thing about the festival and the celebration is that people are together. “People have come from all corners of the country – different, but together. Together, from our roots towards the future. Together, turning to our roots to find strength and confidence, and passing them on through our children and grandchildren into the future. Thank you for bringing them here today, hand in hand. Thank you for having them here in these fields, so that they can feel the Bulgarian spirit,” Iotova told those attending the festival.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Stara Zagora mayor Zhivko Todorov and Metropolitan Cyprian of Stara Zagora.
The Bogorodichna Stupka Festival is held annually at the natural landmark of the same name near the village of Starozagorski Bani and is the largest event in the region dedicated to preserving and promoting Bulgarian songs, dances, customs and traditions. The event is organized with the support of Stara Zagora Municipality, the Starozagorski Bani Mayor’s Office, the Union of Thracian Societies, the Odrysian Epic Thracian Association and the Hristo Botev-1952 Community Centre. Over the years, it has established itself as a stage for hundreds of folklore ensembles and individual performers from across the country, the President’s Press Secretariat also said.
