Technological progress and innovation in the transport sector must develop within the framework of clear rules and guaranteed safety, said Minister of Transport and Communications Georgi Peev during the informal meeting of European Union transport ministers in Dublin, the ministry’s press service reported on Monday. The forum discussed digitization, traffic safety and measures to limit the consequences of the fuel crisis.
During the discussions on innovation and road safety, Peev emphasized the potential of connected and autonomous vehicles. He added that Bulgaria supports the development of a common single system approach in the EU, but the implementation of new technologies must be phased and offer proven safety. The minister said it is necessary to discuss the establishment of a specialized European agency to coordinate processes related to the supervision of new technologies, as well as to support the adaptation of legislation.
During the debates on the energy shock and its impact on the transport sector, Peev said that Bulgaria supports coordinated measures within the EU. He added that such measures would contribute to preserving European transport connectivity and maintaining the competitiveness of European carriers on the international market.
In the discussion on the green transition, Peev underlined the importance of investments in clean technologies and the decarbonization of transport. “These investments will lead to a reduction in external energy dependencies – a step that is a direct matter of security today,” he said.
On Friday, the government announced a package of measures in connection with high fuel prices worth more than EUR 300 million. Among the measures is the abolition of the excise duty on propane-butane. Support in the form of subsidies for structurally determining sectors, including public transport, school and medical transport, is also planned.
