Love ’em or hate ’em, President Donald Trump keeps crawling back to Fox News.
In recent days, the commander in chief has repeatedly attacked the network, both on social media and during a swath of rallies in red states, fuming that Rupert Murdoch’s flagship network is not airing his events, giving time to left-leaning figures, and employing “losers.”
But Trump can’t quit you, baby. He can’t even put you down for a while. And judging by the rage and sweaty desperation with which Trump’s thumbs pound on his smartphone keyboard, it’s clearly getting to him.
Why? Because he needs Fox way more than Fox needs him.
The latest feud erupted on Sunday morning, when Trump jumped on his Truth Social account to slam Fox for declining to cover his red state rallies, and even vowed not to watch:
Sad to see that Fox & Friends (Sunday) is not covering our packed house and incredibly enthusiastic (beyond!) Rally that took place in Ohio last night, or the ones in Alabama, Texas, or Oklahoma over the past two days. These Election Rallies were representative of what is really happening with our great Republican Party. They were all sold out, with thousands of people trying to get in, and are absolutely phenomenal, better than ever! It’s the old undercurrent at FoxNews! Other networks are reporting about these Rallies, and really positively, like ‘crazy!’ Our people want to see our Rallies, and reports on our Rallies, on FoxNews, or they will very quickly stop watching (like I am doing right now!). Fox spends more time talking to Communists, Socialists, and Dumocrats, often without rebuttal, and MAGA is not, to put it mildly, happy.

The president also singled out Jessica Tarlov, one of the network’s few left-leaning voices, saying, “We don’t like stupid Jessica Tarlov, and all of the others, that are forced down MAGA’S throats. These Rallies are the hottest things out there, tremendous love in those sold out arenas, and nothing shows up on Fox!”
On Monday, the president appeared peeved about Democratic candidates, like Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed, getting more airtime than usual on Fox ahead of make-or-break midterm elections.
Speaking to a Grand Island, Nebraska, crowd, he said, “El-Sayed was interviewed just a little while ago on a certain network. I won’t tell you which one. They let this guy talk, talk, talk. They hardly fight him at all. Why are they putting these people on our television networks? Why?”

If you were a Fox News viewer looking to catch Trump’s speech on Monday night, you missed it, as the network didn’t carry it live.
But that clearly wasn’t enough to get Trump to tune out, as it seemed clear on Tuesday morning that Trump was glued to the network, and was even at times live-Truthing its content.
“FoxNews spends more time covering the Jihadist and Dumocrat candidates than they do the good old fashioned Republicans, the people that have saved America, and are making it great again,” Trump posted on Truth Social at 9:50 a.m. “All they talk about is Dumocrat Jihadists like El-Sayed, with his softball interview by Martha MacCallum, and the like. She never interviews me like that. They don’t show my record breaking Rallies the morning after, but others do, and that’s what MAGA is watching. Fox is promoting the Dumocrats, not the Republicans and MAGA. They have totally lost their way!”

At 10:04 a.m., Trump added, “FoxNews is long form interviewing the sleazebag, Dan Osborn, right now, who is running against our GREAT Republican Senator, Pete Ricketts, from Nebraska. Why are they doing this??? The “other side” doesn’t give our people any positive exposure or airtime. It is a miracle that I won, the last by a landslide, three Presidential Races!”
Nearly a half-hour later, Osborn, the independent running against the incumbent Republican Ricketts, spoke with anchor Bill Hemmer for about 10 minutes.
Even when he believes the network is wronging him, Trump can’t stop watching, which is telling, especially since Trump, 80, will not serve a third term, despite what some may say.
So, with 27 months left in the White House, what does Trump want from Fox News?
The president is increasingly desperate to pump up his legacy. He wants a ballroom. He wants his name on the Kennedy Center. A triumphal arch. These are the actions of a man who sees the end and is unraveling as he grasps for more relevance.
Complicating that matter is the fact that Democrats are likely to take over Congress in 2027 (according to Fox News power rankings!), and possibly the Senate.

And it’s Fox News, which celebrates its 30th anniversary on Wednesday, that will ultimately define Trump’s legacy more than any other media outlet. They were around long before he became a political candidate. And they’ll be there long after he’s out of office.
And they will also help determine how Trump will be remembered by those who voted for him. Will Trump fans think back fondly on him the way Reagan’s fans rhapsodized about him for decades?
That’s, in part, up to Fox News — which may choose to pump up the next transformative GOP figure, leaving eight years of Trump to fall by the way of the Tea Party.

And Trump knows this, as he reportedly hosted Murdoch, the media mogul Trump is currently suing, at a White House dinner last week.
Even in the face of Trump’s tirades and efforts to make nice, Fox News is not budging. So Trump can huff and puff all he wants, but he can’t blow 1211 Avenue of the Americas down.
