Trump White House Celebrates NY Times Report on Admin Slashing Legal Immigration in Half 2026

President Donald Trump’s social media team celebrated a Sunday report from The New York Times on the government slashing the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country in half.

Here’s the key slice from the NYT report:

The State Department issued just 26,000 immigrant visas, which grant a green card and legal permanent resident status, in February, compared with an average of 52,000 a month in the years before Trump took office, according to the most recent available government data.

The policies, which took effect late last year and early this year, made it all but impossible to immigrate from 91 countries and reduced the number of immigrant visas available in another 61. Africa and the Middle East were hit particularly hard, and immigration from Muslim-majority countries plunged by more than 90 percent.

Soon after, the “Rapid Response 47” X account posted a graphic from the report, showing legal immigration visas have plummeted during the second Trump administration.

The graphic showed the “change in visas for immigrants each month” has dropped 84% from Eastern Europe, 99% from Central Asia, 89% from Africa, and 17% from Southeast Asia, among other regions. The two places which received more visas: Mexico (+17%) and Canada (+142%).

The Rapid Response 47 account added a thumbs up emoji to its caption above the graphic.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because the same account proudly shared a graphic from the Cato Institute last month, showing immigration from Muslim-majority nations has dropped 96% since ex-President Joe Biden left the White House.

The Cato Institute reported, ” Monthly immigrant visa issuances and permanent lawful refugee admissions fell from 21,096 in December 2024 to 808 in February 2026.″

That same report added:

[The] decline has affected nearly every majority-Muslim nationality in the world. Afghans accounted for fully one in four (27 percent) of all the drop for majority-Muslim countries, going from 5,563 legal immigrants and refugees in December 2024 to just 9 in February 2026—a 99.8 percent decline. Pakistanis followed with a drop of 2,963, or 97.9 percent.

Only three countries—Qatar, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates—saw increases during this period. Notably, Turkey had the smallest decline of just 8 percent.

On Sunday, the Times reported the crackdown on immigration visas comes after the number “declined only slightly” — about 10% — during his first year back in the White House.
