Balgarianovinite.com Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on his first official visit to Belgrade, said at a joint press conference with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic that he understood Vucic’s scepticism about joining the EU, but stressed that Ukraine is at war and has a clear vision of what it wants to become in the future.
“It is not just about reality and enthusiasm when choosing the path towards the EU. I understand Aleksandar’s scepticism, which he shared with me in considerable detail yesterday. Ukraine has no time for scepticism. We are at war, and we realize and understand what Ukraine needs to be in the future,” Zelenskyy said.
Last night, Vucic hosted an official dinner in Zelenskyy’s honour shortly after the Ukrainian President landed at Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Airport, where he was welcomed by Energy and Mining Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic.
As Zelenskyy noted, there is unity within the EU on many issues, not only regarding the war, but also on the fact that the bloc faces some internal challenges of its own.
“There are many issues that need to be balanced so that we can open everything we want. I am confident that we can do it,” he said, adding that Ukraine needs greater support in addressing its financial challenges.
“Last night and today, the President and I discussed bilateral cooperation and measures that could strengthen our infrastructure, railways and security. There are specific infrastructure development projects, including reconstruction projects in Ukraine, that we could implement together. This would make a significant contribution to preserving existing jobs and creating new ones both in Ukraine and Serbia,” he said.
He added that they had discussed the challenges facing Ukraine, as well as thermal power plants in the country that have come under attack.
“I would like to thank everyone in Serbia who welcomed our people with care and concern. We will never forget the kindness shown to Ukrainians,” Zelenskyy said.
He said Ukraine was grateful that Serbia would provide a new package of humanitarian aid, particularly in the areas of healthcare and energy. He also said that talks on a free trade agreement between Ukraine and Serbia were making progress.
“We need to work hard to reach a free trade agreement. These negotiations are moving forward, and that is positive. It would be good to have everything prepared by the end of this year so that we can conclude a free trade agreement between Ukraine and Serbia,” he said.
Zelenskyy also stressed that the situation in Ukraine remained difficult, noting that the country had come under attack last night with ballistic missiles and attack drones.
