Vazrazhdane MP Tsontcho Ganev told reporters in the parliamentary lobby that no one should be surprised that “the war is now in our yard”. “Bulgaria has been a participant in the war for some time now – not since today, nor since last week when the other two ships were attacked,” he added.
On Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced there had been new drone attacks against ships in the Black Sea. He convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council under the Council of Ministers.
When asked where the latest drone attack had come from, Ganev replied that the nature of the attack remains to be proven and established by the authorities. “Anything else is mere speculation,” he said.
“In August, Bulgaria was attacked by a Ukrainian drone, which exploded a few kilometres from one of the gas distribution stations,” Ganev added. “We are involved in this because we have been sending weapons since the very first day of this military conflict. We support all sanctions against Russia and are providing financial aid to Ukraine,” he added. The Vazrazhdane MP stated that the State Agency for National Security has detained two Ukrainian officers. According to him, arms supplies must be halted immediately, and Bulgaria must denounce the agreement with Ukraine signed by caretaker prime minister Andrey Gurov.
The Vazrazhdane MP said that Bulgaria must withdraw from any international agreements providing funds to Ukraine. Last but not least, the country must “immediately stop supporting Ukrainian tourists who are living off the Bulgarian people”, Ganev said.
The MP also commented on the failed extraordinary parliamentary sitting, which was called off due to a lack of quorum, concerning the pardon of Ognyan Atanasov. “This is truly an extremely unpleasant situation. From a purely political point of view, it would be appropriate – to put it mildly – for [Iliana] Iotova to leave the office of the president and withdraw from the election campaign,” Ganev said.
