Balgarianovinite.com The Vazrazhdane party said Saturday that its office in Yambol had been broken into overnight following Friday’s protest against the planned deployment of US refuelling tanker aircraft at Bezmer Air Base in Southeastern Bulgaria.
In a statement, the party said the office had been vandalized, material damage had been caused and property had been reported missing.
The incident has been reported to the Interior Ministry. Vazrazhdane’s branch in Yambol suspects the break-in was a politically motivated attack linked to the party’s support for the protest in Bezmer. The party said it would nevertheless continue supporting protests against the deployment of the US aircraft.
On Friday, Vazrazhdane representatives joined demonstrators protesting the deployment of US refuelling tanker aircraft at Bezmer Air Base.
Residents of the village of Bezmer, the regional centre Yambol and nearby settlements rallied against the deployment of the aircraft, gathering on the road leading to the military airfield. Youth and Sports Minister Encho Kerayzov, until recently a deputy mayor of Yambol, was also present and told BTA he was there to explain the decision taken by the government and the National Assembly.
On July 22, Parliament authorized the presence in Bulgaria of up to eight US Air Force KC-135 aerial refuelling aircraft and up to 250 US military personnel at Bezmer Air Base from July 24 to October 1, 2026, in support of US operations in the Middle East. The proposal was submitted by the Council of Ministers after the US Embassy sent a diplomatic note on July 17 requesting the deployment of up to eight tanker aircraft at Bezmer Air Base under the 2006 Defence Cooperation Agreement between Bulgaria and the United States.
