Balgarianovinite.com Caretaker Energy Minister Traicho Traikov met with the World Bank Group’s Country Manager for Bulgaria, Jason Pellmar, his ministry said. The meeting focused on priorities in the energy sector and the areas where the World Bank could expand its engagement—accelerating the project for building new units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, launching the procedure for selecting the first manager of the National Decarbonization Fund alongside finalizing its operational rules (which will define the investment strategy), as well as preparing an analytical report on possible scenarios for the decarbonization of the economy, the ministry said.
“Upcoming is the launch of the procedure for implementing the Yadenitsa project, which is key to increasing system flexibility and integrating renewable energy sources,” Traikov said, outlining progress on the strategic transformation. In this context, opportunities for cooperation in assessing the feasibility of new pumped-storage hydropower projects were also discussed.
An important result of the partnership between the Ministry of Energy and the World Bank is the development of an online tool for assessing geothermal projects. The platform will support potential investors in comparing the competitiveness of projects against other technologies, allowing for the calculation of the levelized cost of geothermal thermal energy based on geographic location and thermal characteristics.
Emphasis was also placed on continuing support—investment, technological, and social – for the Maritsa East complex in the context of just transition plans. The challenges facing Toplofikatsiya Sofia, including possibilities for identifying sustainable solutions to its accumulated debts to Bulgargaz, were also a focus of the discussion between the energy minister and the head of the World Bank Group’s office in Bulgaria.
Among the topics discussed was the joint work on the energy poverty project, which the international financial institution is currently implementing together with the European Commission. In this regard, the efforts of Bulgarian institutions to find a workable solution to the problem were also highlighted.
