Balgarianovinite.com Minister of Energy Iva Petrova held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkiye Alparslan Bayraktar during her visit to Istanbul, the Ministry of Energy reported on Friday. The two agreed on the need to expand energy cooperation between Bulgaria and Turkiye in a number of areas in the short term.
Petrova stated that the agreement with Botas played an important role in ensuring the security of gas supplies during a period of unprecedented uncertainty in European energy markets. She was referring to a 2023 agreement with Turkish energy company BOTAS under which the Bulgarian side booked capacity of 106.4GWh/day on the Turkish LNG regasification terminals and agreed to pay for this EUR 512,000 daily for a period ending in 2035.
During the meeting, opportunities for deepening cooperation in the field of energy connectivity were also discussed, including the development of regional energy corridors, which are of key importance for the diversification of supplies and strengthening energy security in Southeastern Europe.
On June 20, Minister Petrova expressed her expectation that the agreement with the Turkish company Botas and its parameters would be completely renegotiated within one or two months in the context of new market conditions. Expert talks are currently underway to renegotiate the agreement, she explained at the time.
