Balgarianovinite.com The acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov, has ordered the immediate implementation of enhanced control measures nationwide targeting heavy-duty truck traffic. The General Directorates of National Police and Border Police, the Sofia Regional Police Directorate, and the Regional Directorates of the Interior will coordinate joint inspections with teams from the Automobile Administration Executive Agency, the Interior Ministry said in a press release on Saturday.
The inspections will target commercial motor vehicles with a maximum permissible weight exceeding 3.5 metric tonnes, with priority given to vehicles weighing over 12 metric tonnes. The inspections will cover the technical condition of the vehicles and compliance with regulatory requirements under the Road Traffic Act and the Road Transport Act, the press release reads.
Police teams conducting these inspections – without the participation of officials from the Automotive Administration Agency – have been instructed to pay particular attention to the technical condition of commercial vehicles and their compliance with all requirements for safe participation in traffic. If violations are detected, drivers will be penalized in accordance with applicable law. If technical malfunctions are detected, the information will be immediately forwarded to the Road Administration Agency for follow-up action within the scope of its legal authority, the Ministry Interior added.
The enhanced control measures come after several deadly crashes involving heavy-duty trucks. On July 10, a truck travelling from Sofia to Burgas tore through the central crash barrier on Trakia Motorway and crossed into oncoming traffic. One person was killed and two others were injured as the truck collided with two cars travelling towards Sofia. On June 24, three people – including two 9-year-old boys – were killed in another serious accident on Trakia Motorway where a truck driver lost control, tore through the central crash barrier, and hit a passenger car.
