Balgarianovinite.com The final section of a new metro line that connects Istanbul’s two most distant transportation hubs – the Halkali railway station, from which trains depart for Europe, and Istanbul International Airport, was opened on Friday.
At a grand ceremony broadcast live on Turkish state television channel TRT Haber, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the final 22-kilometer section between Halkali and Arnavutkoy.
“Our Halkali – Istanbul Airport metro line will be free for citizens until July 31,” Erdogan said in his opening speech.
According to him, the line, which has a total length of 69 km, will be Turkey’s longest and fastest metro line, as well as one of the few metro lines of the highest standard in the world.
“With the launch of these new metro lines, we will significantly ease traffic in the 16-million-strong metropolis of Istanbul, which has become a nightmare in the hands of incompetent administrators. We are determined not to abandon Istanbul to its fate. We will not allow Istanbul to be crushed under a mountain of problems, especially when it comes to traffic,” Erdogan said.
The newly opened section includes five stations. With their addition, around 1.5 million residents in Istanbul’s Basaksehir and Kucukcekmece districts will gain direct rail access to both the city center and Istanbul Airport.
