Erik and Lyle Menendez, the brothers who were convicted in 1996 for murdering their parents, will get a chance at parole next year.
Erik, now 55, and Lyle, now 58, murdered José and Kitty Menendez in 1989, originally claiming the killings were a mob hit; they were 18 and 21 at the time. The brothers’ extravagant spending in the wake of their parents’ deaths drew attention and they were arrested after friends and Erik’s psychologist told police they had confessed to the crimes.
The brothers’ defenses included arguing that they committed the murders in self-defense after years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse from their parents.
The juries deadlocked for the brothers’ first trials, but they were both convicted of first-degree murder in their second trials and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
After years of appeals, the brothers were resentenced in May 2025 to fifty years to life — sentences that made them now eligible for parole. Other surviving relatives have publicly pushed for the brothers’ release, in media interviews and in court, supporting their claims they were abused and arguing they have been “model prisoners.”
A few months later, both were rejected by the California Parole Board after documented rule violations, including possession of illegal cell phones, and Erik Menendez being linked to a prison gang.
However, on Monday, the brothers successfully were granted an early parole suitability hearing, according to a report by ABC News.
The hearing is tentatively scheduled for March 2027, ABC News reported.
The family released a statement to the press, emphasizing that the brothers had spent their more than three decades in prison launching a beautification project and a hospice program.
“For almost 40 years, Erik and Lyle have worked to take responsibility for their actions, confront and heal from the unimaginable abuse and trauma they endured, grow as individuals, and dedicate themselves to serving others,” the family statement continued. “Erik and Lyle were once sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. We will always be profoundly grateful that they have been resentenced and that our family can now imagine a future in which they are once again part of our everyday lives.”
